RECOGNITION OF ADJECTIVES

An adjective is usually placed immediately in front of the noun it refers to, or is linked to its noun by “is”.

The Common Adjective

Describes common nouns

Examples:

    • Fat potato
    • Lone ranger
    • Little man
    • Double-storey house
    • Clever learner
    • Quality show


The Proper Adjective

Derives from proper nouns

Examples:

    • Sunday lunch
    • American way
    • Panama hat
    • Roman holiday
    • Protestant tradition
    • English literature

TYPES OF ADJECTIVES:

Manner

These answer the questions : How? In what manner?

e.g. He was walking slowly.

He spoke loudly.

Place

These answer the question: Where?

e.g. She refused to go outside.

Come here!

Time

These answer the question: When?

e.g. He is due to arrive today.

Everybody wears denims nowadays.

Reason

These answer the question: Why?

e.g. He was therefore promoted.

The meeting was cancelled because of the storm.

Degree

These answer the questions How much? Or to what degree/extent?

e.g. I am very tired.
