At St Stephen’s, our spiritual life is the heartbeat of our community. We want this page to be a window into our reflections - a place where we can share the wisdom of the Christian faith while celebrating the perspectives of all our families. We hope these weekly themes offer a moment for your family to talk together about the values that connect us all.
How can we get ready for Easter by looking at Jesus’ example?
As we begin the season of Lent, we are looking at how we can get ready for Easter by following Jesus’ example. This week, we explored the story of Jesus in the desert (Matthew 4:1–11). In the Christian tradition, this story shows Jesus being tempted to take the easy way out or to use his power selfishly. However, Jesus chose to stay true to his purpose and rely on God for strength.
During our KS1 worship this week, Mrs Blomley and the children took a closer look at that tricky word: temptation. We discussed how everyone, from characters in the Bible to children in the playground, faces moments where they are tempted to do something they shouldn't.
We compared the story of Jesus in the desert with the story of Adam and Eve, looking at the different choices made and how those choices affected others. Through these stories, the children reflected on why it is always important to try to do the 'right thing', even when it feels difficult. They came up with a change, with actions, "If I feel tempted I can... think about something else, tell a trusted adult or I can distract myself by playing a game"
Service Challenge: Give someone strength: If you see a friend struggling to make a good choice or feeling frustrated, offer them a kind word or an invitation to play to help them reset.
Creative Challenge: Create a 'Prayer Pebble'. Find a small stone and decorate it or simply keep it in your pocket. Whenever you face a tricky decision this week, hold the pebble as a physical reminder to pause, breathe, and ask for the strength to make the right choice.
The Connection Challenge: During a quiet moment, share a story with someone at home about a time you found it hard to do the right thing. Discuss who helped you find the strength to stay on track.
"Jesus relied on God to help him make hard choices rather than just his own strength. Who are the people in your life, or the values in your heart, that you turn to when you feel tempted to do the wrong thing?"
