Dear Parent/Carer,
The government has released a new plan for children with additional needs, called Every Child Achieving and Thriving, also known as the SEND Reform White Paper. It looks at Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) support over the next ten years. It is not the law yet, but it could change the support children and families receive in the future.
We have spoken to hundreds of families since the paper was released, and we know the new plan can feel confusing or worrying. You may be wondering if this will change the help your child gets at school, what it means for their rights, or whether you need to do anything now. At Skylarks, we are reading the plan carefully. Our SEND education specialists will explain what it means in clear, simple language.
We are glad the government now accepts that the system is not working and needs big changes. We welcome the idea of inclusive schools from the start, as well as more funding for teacher training and specialists.
However, we have serious questions about how these Individual Support Plans will work in practice and whether the funding will be enough to make them a success. We are particularly concerned that these plans cannot be appealed at a Tribunal, leaving families without a vital safety net. Without addressing these practicalities, and the needs of children currently out of the school system, it is unclear if these changes will truly improve school culture.

The government needs to hear from families before 18th May 2026. We are currently writing our own response based on what we've heard from you, but it is vital that you also share your story directly.

On the Ball is a sport based programme of fun and learning. It supports parents and their children, aged 5+, who may have hidden communication needs. On the Ball starts with an essential parent workshop followed by applying for our family activity sessions. On the Ball is run in partnership between Brentford FC Community Sports Trust and Action-attainment CIC.
Many families who join On the Ball become regular, weekly attenders of our football groups run in East Sheen, at Palewell Park and Richmond Park Academy. Families then explore other sports through our holiday programme Fun in the Sun.
On the Ball explains how children’s hidden communication and sensory needs can affect them socially, educationally and into employment. It demonstrates simple strategies for inclusion through playing games and having fun together as a family.
We include parents and siblings if that helps a child to gain confidence and skills to join in.
On the Ball can help with understanding:
Strategies to build concentration
Communication/listening difficulties – with examples of language modelling
Supporting children’s development in sport and school through parent/professional partnership
Finding a peer group and support network for children and families
We are pleased to share a series of upcoming workshops designed to support families navigating the Special Educational Needs (SEN) process. These sessions provide practical advice, legal clarity, and a supportive space to ask questions.

Information for children unable to attend school due to illness, exclusion, or other circumstances.
What to expect: A look at Section 19 of the Education Act. Learn what constitutes "suitable education" and gain practical advocacy tips to protect your child’s rights.

Thursday 9th April: 16:00 – 17:00
Specifically for children transitioning to a new phase of education this September (e.g., Year 6 to Secondary).
What to expect: A guide to timelines, the transition process, and your rights if you disagree with the named school setting.
