In the Spotlight: Families of Promise

Families of Promise was a conception of local leaders recognizing an unmet need in our community. In 2008, Catholic Charities together with Torchlight Youth Mentoring (formerly Big Brothers Big Sisters Lake County) developed the program collaboratively with the aim of surrounding the families with adequate supports and services to prevent a criminal cycle from continuing. Guided by Catholic Charities this program is locally funded by the Lake County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Board and it has become a respected model in the region.

Families of Promise works with children up to age 18 who have a parent who is currently or was previously incarcerated, as well as with the adults responsible for their care. The first priority is to help the non-incarcerated parent or caregiver feel supported and help them deal effectively with immediate issues, such as housing, finances, employment, and the children’s safety and well-being. In addition to comprehensive case management services, adults in the program may also elect to take part in evidence-based parenting curriculums – Parent Café or Triple P, Positive Parenting Program. For more information about Families of Promise contact the Catholic Charities Lake County office of highly trained staff that will provide guidance to help you navigate life’s challenges. They will work with you on ways to overcome difficulties in a safe, confidential, and objective space.

Each Agency supported by the Lake County ADAMHS Board is listed on this page. Each section has a quick reference guide for the age population served, as well as a continuum of services divided by tier of intensity. To speak to some directly at the Lake County ADAMHS Board, call 440- 350- 3117.

When a Lake County resident requires medical intervention as the result of a drug overdose, a team—typically a law enforcement officer, an EMT, and an expert in treatment resources—will visit that individual shortly thereafter. They’ll offer information about and access to local treatment resources.

Trauma Response offers free, timely, coordinated support in the wake of a suicide, assault, large scale accident, or other tragedy.

A group of locally-based behavioral health professionals who work within the ADAMHS network will be deployed to the site on request. These interventions are not intended to take the place of counseling or therapy. Our team makes every effort to identify those who may be in need of additional professional mental health services and help connect them with appropriate resources.

To access Trauma Response services call Lake County’s Crisis Hotline at 440-953-8255. A team leader will contact you to learn more about the nature and scope of the incident and to begin planning an appropriate response strategy.

Lake County’s Community Alliance of Law Enforcement and Mental Health Services (CALMHS) Committee’s goal is to foster communication and cooperation between local law enforcement personnel, mental health treatment providers, and courts to ensure that more people with a mental illness get the help they need.
