What's New in Assistive Technology!
At every IEP, the IEP Team considers whether a student requires Assistive Technology (AT) tools / services to make progress on his/her IEP goals and/or to access the curriculum. Consideration of AT may also happen throughout the year.
1a. If AT is not needed to make progress on IEP goals or to access the curriculum, then AT has been considered and is not required at this time. The student is making progress with the current programming and supports. This determination is documented in the IEP. AT may be reconsidered continually and annually at the IEP meeting.
1b. If AT is needed to make progress on IEP goals and/or participate in the general education curriculum, then proceed to step 2.
Determine which of the following is true about the student's AT usage and progress on goals:
2a. AT is currently being used and is supporting progress toward IEP goals. Proceed to step 5.
2b. AT is being used but is not sufficiently supporting progress toward IEP goals. Proceed to step 3.
2c. The student is not using AT but may require it to make progress. Proceed to step 3.
Determine which of the following is true about the team's familiarity with available AT tools and complete the described steps:
3a. The team is familiar with district-wide AT tools and will implement trial period tools to overcome documented barriers. Continue to step 4.
3b. The team is not familiar with AT tools. The Case Manager submits an AT Facilitator Request Form. A collaborative discussion is scheduled with the IEP team. The SETT framework guides the team in determining trial period tools to overcome documented barriers. Once this is completed, continue to step 4.
The AT tool is trialed and data is collected on specific learning objectives.
The AT consideration, AT tool(s) features, and consultative services are documented in the IEP, and reviewed continually, as well as annual at the IEP meeting.
