Application Tips

  • Stay organized.

      • Pay close attention to your deadlines. It is your responsibility to make sure your teachers and counselor are aware of your deadlines. Please alert them if any changes are made.

      • Maintain a copy of all materials submitted (both online and through US mail).

      • Keep a copy of all usernames, passwords, and PIN numbers in the same place for easy reference. You may wish to use a Google Sheet like our College Search Organizer.

  • Take your time.

      • Read all application instructions carefully. If they only accept one letter of recommendation, then only send one. Do not assume sending more will help you get in because it will only prove you did not read the instructions.

      • Make sure you are reporting accurately. Have your transcript with you when you begin filling out your applications. You can view and print your transcript on Infinite Campus.

      • Proofread what you write! Do not wait until the last minute to write your essays. Take your time and ask for feedback.

  • Stay in the loop.

      • Update all information in Naviance on a regular basis.

      • Use a professional email when applying to college. Hipchick@gmail.com is not an appropriate email address. Colleges may contact you via email for additional information or updates on their admission procedures. (Use a PERSONAL email, not your school email account)

      • Check your Student Portal (after you have applied) – It is the student’s responsibility to check the student portal with each college campus. This is the primary means of communication between you and the colleges you are applying to.

  • Be thorough.

      • Use your legal name on all documents and be consistent.

  • Accurately self-report your grades. Use your transcripts as a reference to report accurate semester grades. This can be downloaded from the Documents section of Infinite Campus. Inaccurately reported grades could result in your admissions offer being rescinded.

  • SAT and ACT scores must be sent directly from College Board or ACT. Self-reports are not considered official and Cal High does not provide these scores to the colleges.
