Calling all kids!
We all know that these days of shelter-in-place can be pretty lonely. This is even more profoundly felt by our elderly neighbors. One way to bring a little joy into the daily life of our friends in care facilities is to send a letter! Some classrooms are “adopting” a center - check with your teacher. But EVERYONE can participate.
All you need to do is write a card or letter, put your teacher’s name on the card, and drop it in the box at the garden at Sun Valley.
The CDC, World Health Organization, and Surgeon General have indicated that there is currently no evidence that COVID-19 is being spread through the mail. But to take extra precautions, these letters will be quarantined for 48 hours before being delivered.
Thanks to SV parent Danielle Eigner (mom to Jakob and Caleb) for this wonderful idea!
1. Letters must be legible (large print) and handwritten. No worries if you’re not artistic– make your card as what you’d like to receive.
2. Address simply. You can start your letter with a simple “Hello, Friend!” We also encourage you to sign the card with your first name. It is VERY important that your classroom teacher’s name is on the card.
3. Exclude the date (day, month, and year).
4. Embrace creativity! Recipients love it when the letters are personal. We encourage you to make your letters detailed, thoughtful and heartfelt.
5. Be kind and thoughtful (more than talking about yourself). This is a one-way letter exchange, meaning you will not receive a letter back, so remember that no reciprocation attached is part of the beauty of your act of kindness, and the recipients don’t feel burdened by feeling obligated or being unable to respond.
6. Envelope your letters if you can! It’s so much nicer to open up an enveloped card, don’t you think? Do not seal the envelope. Each card will be put into one delivery to each care center.
7. Share your act of kindness! We love seeing photos of your letter writing, and it helps promote our cause more than you know. Email mgreenwood@srcs.org or tag us on social media.
