Gr 11 Habitat for humanity house building
Masiphumele 2019
Last week, 35 gr 11’s and five staff members attended the Habitat for Humanity build. It was a very enriching experience. Mrs Morgan, Me Meder, Ms Reagan, Ms Cooper and Ms Going are all thanked for going with the girls and helping to build the home. Here are some of the paragraphs written by the gr 11’s on their experience: Habitat for Humanity was an incredibly rewarding experience. I really enjoyed spending time with people in my grade and members of the community that we were working in. I will always remember the conversations I had with one of the men from the community where he told me about his involvement within drama and playwriting. I was amazed at the passion he had for community development and social justice and at really challenging the stereotypical beliefs of his community. I felt a great sense of unity in working with everyone in an environment where there was no hierarchy and where we all could just be ourselves without judgement. It was an amazing experience and I would definitely recommend it to future grade 11s. Mikaela Hughes Habitat for humanity was an amazing experience for so many reasons. When we arrived in Masiphumelele we were able to see the living conditions of so many people in country. This experience was no longer about building some random house but preparing this house for a family knowing the living conditions they were My group mainly mixed cement and cleaning the walls of the interior of the house. While this may have seemed like tedious work at the time, the habitat worker we followed encouraged us to enjoy the work we were doing. We were in shock at how hard this man was working on a strangers home. He was meticulous about every detail on the house I think of the warm welcome I felt from each person we worked with. I think about the wall I helped build knowing that will be someone’s living room .Habitat for Humanity changed the way I viewed myself and the areas around me. The experience made me re-evaluate how I react when I meet new people and hear their stories. I can't wait to someday return and see how those families are doing. They spoke about how much our help meant to them, but in all honesty...helping out was the least we could do. Megan Crowhurst The experience at Habitat for Humanity was indeed a valuable one. Apart from practicing new physical techniques in building, the volunteers and workers were really friendly and cooperative. The township itself felt warm and amicable like a family environment and it was a privilege to be able to experience and work in such a place. When the opportunity comes again I am sure I will volunteer to go to Habitat building once more. Michelle Jung Ineffable - that’s all I can say and yet that word encapsulates the whole experience. The fun, memories and the smiles outweighed the heat on the day and the pain that followed the next day. Knowing that I contributed to making a difference in the lives of others, is truly rewarding. This is definitely an experience I would recommend and encourage others to do. The volunteers were welcoming and made the experience magnificent! Caitlyn de Mink It was a really rewarding experience. We all worked really hard but still had fun with each other and the group leaders. It was really cool to actually see the progress on the houses at to see one of the homeowners who was actually going to be living in one of the houses we’d helped build.

HELP board games needed
HELP (Homework Enrichment Learning Programme) is one of our tutoring programs that runs from Mondays to Thursdays after school. In addition to the tutoring that happens the students also have fun together by playing some board games. Most of the games are quite old at this stage and have many pieces missing. If you have any old board games lying around that still have all the pieces, please consider donating them. They can be placed in the Outreach Donation Box that is at the Afrikaans Block.
Phoenix Burns Project
The Grade 11 leadership team and the Outreach Portfolio are working together on the Phoenix Burns Project https://www.facebook.com/phoenixburnsproject/ . It is a non-profit organisation that focus on fire prevention and training kids in vulnerable communities to prevent fires in their homes. They are selling badges to raise money for the organisation for R5,00 each. These can be bought from them in the avenue in the mornings or in the matric quad during breaks. Donations are also welcome and girls may wear their badges on their blazers during the month of October.
Santa ShoeBox
Each year the Santa Shoebox Project collects and distributes personalised gifts of essential items and treats for underprivileged children throughout South Africa and Namibia (https://santashoebox.org.za/).
The Outreach Portfolio will be packing a couple of these boxes to drop off in town on Saturday, 2 November. If you are packing one this year and would like us to deliver it for you, please hand it in by Friday, 1 November. Remember that all items in the Santa Shoe Box must be new. You will need to go to the website to register and select the specific child that you want to pack a ShoeBox for.
