Artist Amy Sillmean writes, “Shapes are how you make distinctions, get the lay of the land, or even tell time. Doesn’t everyone have two shapes, really? The first being your own body, which you can’t get out of, and the second being your shadow, which you can’t get rid of…Your shadow is your personal shape, your silent companion, your own flat echo. It’s worse than your ego, it’s your creep. It’s always there.” In this year’s gallery course we will be exploring the visual and conceptual qualities of shadows.
Thinking about the inescapable and constantly changing nature of shadows, and the ways that they both conceal and reveal, we will question our own relationships to, and understanding of these “silent companions” and begin to ask, what they are saying. You may choose to work in painting, installation, video, or sculpture to create a work exploring this topic that will be exhibited at the end of J-Term.
