It’s the spring of 1933. Berlin. The staff and performers of a Kabaret are preparing for the opening night of their latest show, with all of the accompanying jitters, last-minute disasters, backstage drama, excitement, and chaos. What none of them know, however, is that their first performance will also be their last. Adolf Hitler has just been elected chancellor of Germany, and his Brownshirts are shutting down “degenerate” shows and nightclubs. Dancing on the Edge of a Volcano follows the lives of a handful of cast and crew members present on that final night–the night that everyone’s life changed forever.
Created by actors, writers, musicians and visual artists from SPCPA in collaboration with Performing Artists from Interact Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, this groundbreaking production will be a passionate act of poetic rebellion as Cubism, Dada, Surrealism, Bauhaus, and jazz combine in an explosion of unbridled creativity to create a work that will lift your spirits and break your heart.
