Epinephrine Auto-Injector Training requirements:

1. Notify EMS/School Nurse/Administrator

* Please note the time the auto-injector was administered and then immediately call 911. You should tell the 911      operator there is a probable anaphylactic reaction and an auto-injector (epi-pen, auvi-Q etc.) was used and the time given.

a. Remember the epinephrine auto-injector is not a cure, it is only a first aid measure in order to get the patient to the ER       for other medication.

If symptoms don’t improve after 5-10 minutes or resolve and then return, a second dose of epinephrine may be needed.

MOST AUTO-INJECTION DEVICES ARE SINGLE USE ONLY.  IF A SECOND DOSAGE IS REQUIRED YOU WOULD NEED AN          ADDITIONAL DEVICE. (You can give the used auto-injector to the ambulance crew for proper disposal.)

2. Nurse/Administrator needs to be informed

3. Parents are then called.

 Documentation

After an auto-injector is given, documentation would include an accident report and also informing the school nurse of the incident.

 Storage/Maintenance

1. Students who have doctor’s orders for auto-injectors and who have provided one to the school:

* Students are allowed by law with proper paperwork in the nurse’s office to carry auto-injectors on them, not all students carry but some do (this is dependent on age level and ability to self-administer device)

* Some students keep their auto-injector in the nurse’s office (all student's at the elementary level)

* Some students keep their auto-injector in the nurse’s office and also carry their auto-injector

2. All auto-injectors in the nurse’s office have their expiration dates checked and recorded by the nurse’s office. Parents are informed if the expiration date is approaching and are requested to supply new medication. All stock auto-injectors also have their expiration dates checked by the nurse’s office.

3.  If a student is carrying their auto-injector it is the responsibility of the student and the parent/guardian to make sure the medication is not expired.

4. Stock auto-injectors are kept:

In the nurse’s office in the cabinet above the sink.  Cabinet door is labeled with a sign stating "Epi-Pens".

5. Emergency Care Plans

Each student who has a known allergy with an ordered auto-injector has an individual Student Emergency Care Plan. We use the FARE form.

* Information in these plans includes information about the allergy, emergency contact information, and medication. If you have a student with an Emergency Plan you should review it so you are familiar with the information it contains.

Emergency Care Plans can be found:

* In the nurse’s office in the pink binder on the nurse's desk (doctor's order book)

     * In the Medication boxes in the med cabinet

** If you have a student in your classroom with an Emergency Action Plan you are given a copy of the plan at the beginning of the year

IF YOU GIVE AN EPIPEN/AUVI-Q REMEMBER TO IMMEDIATELY CALL 911!!!
