Design of formative assessments
Use for planning
When it comes to student assessment, I like to assess students through formative and summative assessments. I utilize formative assessments to help track levels of understanding and to see if students are reaching goals and benchmarks within my classes. Specifically with my 7th and 8th grade classes, I have my architecture unit setup so that students have multiple formative assessments to gain/give feedback and check in to see how they are doing with their own work and progression. In this unit, I have students complete a "gallery walk" where they write anonymous feedback of each others Dream House designs on the backside of a sticky note. I also created a summative rubric where they get to assess themselves at the conclusion of the unit and reflect upon how they think they have done throughout the journey of their project. I have started experimenting with single point rubrics within my projects, which allow me to provide more written feedback, as opposed to just numbers and basic level descriptors. I also have created an entire table within Google Doc that illustrates how I am reaching each standard. See my final project writeup below for details.
