As of 2021, The Mover has become a digital publication. We post our written works on our Wix site and we announce them on our Instagram and Facebook pages using visual publication materials. To maximize them, we aim to make them visually pleasing, unique to each of our designers, and attention-grabbing for our readers. To do this, we challenge our layout artists to design according to the criteria below.
Please note that we give a lot of creative liberty to our layout artists when making publication materials. While these templates are meant to be guidelines on what information each design should include, they aren't meant to be strict cookie-cutter molds. Included here are previous designs that integrate the designer's personal style and creative intuition with the information required by these standards.
Posts on Instagram rely on the balance of visuals and text. That's why designers must gear up their visual arts skills while incorporating small bits of text that don't overwhelm the design.
For the first slide on our Instagram posts, the designer must add two things: a headline and a snippet from the article. These snippets are chosen by editors/pod leaders while editing as they're meant to be a good but attention-grabbing representation of the written work.
NOTE: While the template seems to look like a strict and rigid guideline, the gray boxes are meant to represent where this information is meant to be placed in the general design.
You may look below for creative examples of this template.
Above, you can see designers who have implemented the headline and snippets of text seamlessly into their layout. They also made sure that the text and the visuals are balanced and one does not overwhelm the other.
The second slide will be where we place the author's photo, name, and bio. The last of which can be found in the sheets.
Another feature of the second slide is to add the QR Code, in case someone is scrolling through Instagram on a desktop or a tablet. This is due in part that we can't yet place live links in the post's caption for it to redirect to the article on our site.
In 2022, The Mover finally opened our own Facebook page, meaning we could do away with the QR Codes and paste active links directly in the captions of our publication materials.
On Facebook, we're free to go for more rectangular, vertical designs with leeway for text. This means we can include larger blocks of text as Facebook's main form of content is presented through text.
Here, we'll require a headline, content, and a large byline that includes our contact details. We have yet to see how our designers come up publication materials for this platform and we look forward as to how they may experiment and play with it.
