Welcome to the Somervale School PSHE Department
KS3 PSHE Curriculum Overview
Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) at KS3 helps students develop the knowledge, skills, and values needed to navigate life beyond school. Students complete one unit per term, with assessments that include knowledge questions and scenario-based tasks. They also benefit from outside speakers and experience days.
Year 7 focuses on personal development and adjusting to secondary school. Topics include:
What is PSHE? (building friendships and understanding healthy relationships)
Local Government (how councils operate)
Healthy Lifestyle (physical and mental health, puberty, media influence)
Drugs and Peer Pressure (substance awareness and decision-making)
Careers and Skills (identifying strengths and future aspirations)
Safety and Risk Management (staying safe in different situations)
Year 8 builds on Year 7, exploring society, responsibility, and self-development. Topics include:
Democracy (voting and civic participation)
Rights and Responsibilities (human rights and fairness)
Money Management (budgeting and financial responsibility)
Health (substance effects and decision-making)
Relationships (consent, self-esteem, and healthy relationships)
Careers and Entrepreneurship (career exploration and entrepreneurship)
Year 9 focuses on societal challenges and preparing for the future. Topics include:
Drugs (legal vs. illegal substances and drug-related emergencies)
The Wider World (knife crime, radicalisation, and safety)
Careers and Options (choosing GCSEs aligned with strengths and goals)
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) (contraception, STIs, and inclusivity)
Wellbeing (mental health, mindfulness, body image)
The KS4 PSHE curriculum supports students in navigating adolescence and preparing for their futures. With one lesson every other week as well as drop-days focused on key issues, students cover a range of topics to develop essential life skills.
Year 10 and 11 Topics:
Managing GCSEs and Workloads: Strategies for balancing studies, setting priorities, and managing stress.
Health and Wellbeing: Focus on mental and physical health, including stress management, the effects of alcohol, coping with bereavement, and raising mental health awareness.
The Wider World: Covers societal issues such as the criminal justice system, knife crime, fake news, and awareness of FGM and Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE).
Finance: A session with a finance expert on budgeting, saving, and money management.
Global and Personal Safety: Topics include extremism, gambling, online safety, CPR, and the influence of media.
Relationships and Sexual Health: Covers STI prevention, contraception, consent, and recognizing healthy and unhealthy relationships.

Our PSHE extra-curricular program offers engaging opportunities to support students’ personal growth and wellbeing.
Key events include:
Celebrating Differences Day, promoting inclusivity and diversity.
Wellbeing Day, focusing on mental health and self-care.
Students benefit from visits by the Great Western Ambulance Services, Local Police, and the School Nurse, gaining valuable insights into health, safety, and community support.
We also provide finance workshops, teaching essential money management skills like budgeting, saving, and banking.
Additionally, Year 9 and Year 11 students participate in mindfulness sessions, helping them manage stress and build resilience.
These activities complement our PSHE curriculum, empowering students to thrive in all aspects of life.
Homework in PSHE is delivered through our 'Pick and Mix' homework activities with different options to choose from each term. These include the following topics:
