Physical Education at Somervale
Welcome to the Physical Education (PE) Department at Somervale School! Our curriculum is designed to be ambitious and comprehensive, with a strong focus on engaging students in lifelong physical activity. At Key Stage 3 (KS3), we emphasise that "PE Runs Deep," aiming to develop students’ competence and confidence while educating them about the importance of regular activity. We strive to instil resilience and self-confidence in all our students.
Key Stage 3 Overview
In KS3, we build upon the range of experiences students bring from primary school, allowing them to develop new, sport-specific skills across a variety of activities. Our curriculum is structured around a four-week rotation, enabling students to engage in 11 different activities throughout the year. This approach maintains an energetic pace of learning. Students are grouped by their attitude to learning and are taught in mixed-gender groups to promote inclusivity and collaboration.
As students progress through KS3, we employ a cyclical model that allows them to build on their learning year after year. Additionally, we offer numerous extracurricular clubs, providing further opportunities for students to enhance their skills and stay active.
Key Stage 4 Overview
At Key Stage 4 (KS4), we offer both examined and core PE. Core PE is a compulsory subject, ensuring that all students participate in two lessons per week. During these lessons, students are encouraged to engage independently in a variety of activities, with the freedom to choose their focus every five weeks. Our primary goal is to foster enjoyment in physical activity, and we are proud to maintain a 100% engagement rate in KS4.
For those interested in a deeper understanding of sports and physical activity, we offer examined PE as an optional subject. Students can choose to study GCSE PE or NCFE Health & Fitness, both designed to nurture a love for physical education and equip students with the qualifications they need for future success.
A-Level and Beyond
Somervale School also offers A Level Physical Education, providing students with the opportunity to further their education in this field. This pathway can lead to further studies or a career in sports and related industries.
Student Feedback
Our annual student feedback consistently shows that students have a positive experience in Physical Education at Somervale School. We are committed to creating an engaging and supportive environment for all students.
If you have any questions about our Physical Education curriculum, please feel free to contact me at ikelly@somervaleschool.com. We look forward to encouraging all students to embrace the benefits of physical activity!
