In this age of unprecedented change and turmoil, we in the humanities are asked to examine anew whether there are key features that define us as humans and core values towards which we are to strive in order to realize.

Korea as the crossroad of East and West, old and new, is faced with a particularly heightened demand for such humanistic endeavors, having experienced fundamental political, social and economic change over the last one hundred years, while also brimming with new cultural and intellectual energy as a result of such ground-shaking change.

As a crucible of diverse, often conflicting, traditions and values, we in the humanities can no longer delay reflective efforts to both understand the phenomenon that is Korea and see how this phenomenon relates to the broader global context.

This conference aims to render explicit our acceptance of this challenge and set forth on the path to begin to account for what Koreanness might be, if there is such a thing at all, and, in so doing, understand how what is occurring on this peninsula both reflects and influences the world.

We invite both scholars working in the humanities in Korea and international scholars working in Korean studies to partake in this novel humanistic project dubbed Nova Humanitas Coreana.
