All students take Social Studies 9 and 10. Students must complete at least one Social Studies 11/12 course to satisfy the graduation requirement.
SMUS does not offer any Grade 11 Social Studies courses; Grade 11 students can take any of the Social Studies 12 offerings.
Students graduating in 2018 or after must earn credit in at least one Grade 11 or 12 Social Studies course. At SMUS, we only offer Social Studies courses at the Grade 12 level.
Social Studies courses at SMUS that will meet the Ministry of Education graduation requirement are: Economic Theory 12; Law Studies 12 ; Contemporary Indigenous Studies 12: Decolonization; Social Justice 12: Criminology; World History 12.
Many of these courses are designed to prepare students for success in a related AP course. Students are encouraged to take the Grade 12 level course in their Grade 11 year, and the AP course in their Grade 12 year.

No, AP courses do not satisfy the Social Studies graduation requirement. However, students may have the opportunity to challenge a Socials 12 course while taking their AP course and thereby fulfill the graduation requirement.
Exception: AP Psychology can not provide Social Studies 11/12 credit, even through a challenge process.
No. Due to its mature content, this course is only offered to Grade 12 students. AP Psychology does not qualify as a Social Studies graduation requirement credit.
