All Grade 9 students take a second language and it is strongly encouraged that students continue their second language in Grades 10 and 11.
The department offers Grade 9-12 and AP courses in French, Spanish and Chinese (Mandarin).
All Grade 9 students will take a second language; it is important that a student be placed in a level in which they will have the greatest chance of being successful in their linguistic growth and confidence. Students will be assessed throughout September to ensure accurate placement.
During the course selection process in the Spring, students may be recommended to move to a different level. Native speakers of a language are discouraged from taking that language in Grade 9. We encourage those students to take a different language.
A second language at the Grade 11 or 12 level is not generally required for admission to Canadian universities; however, some American colleges/universities require three or sometimes four years of study (in high school) of a second language.
Some specific programs at university require a second language, particularly in areas of study such as journalism, Arts programs and cultural or regional studies (e.g. Pacific and Asian Studies).
Yes. As a Grade 10, 11, or 12 elective course, the department offers French, Spanish, and Chinese. Students entering Grade 9 would have to ask permission from the School Administration (e.g. Mr Eliot Anderson) for permission to take a second foreign language in the Grade 9 timetable.
Near the beginning of the course (e.g. within the first term) in consultation with the language teacher and Academic Advisor, the student may be advised to move up a level, presuming there are no significant timetable conflicts or restrictions.
