How will SMBSD sustain the educator preparation program(s) through the provisional 2–3 year approval process, if granted?
The Santa Maria Bonita School District currently has a New Teacher Onboarding Program supported by the Department of Teaching and Learning. Program Specialist for Teacher Development, Shelli Hart, and TOSA for Teacher Development, Michele Ming, will continue to support and monitor the progress of all new teachers, as well as support and train all mentors and site instructional coaches. The new teacher support currently in place includes onboarding, monthly collaboration, recruitment and training of mentors, training and support of all instructional coaches, online support via our Google classroom, and biannual conferences for new teachers. In addition to our current support model, we will monitor all induction work through our Google classroom throughout the provisional approval process.
Current and New positions that will support Induction in our district:
Program Specialist for Teacher Development: Induction Director
Santa Maria Bonita School District, which is a PK-8th grade district, works closely with our high school district, Santa Maria Joint-Union High School, which is our 9-12 grade partner. We have an ongoing working relationship as we must align our calendars, CTE Pathways, grading policies, and transition plans. We will integrate any new teachers that wish to partake in our SMBSD Induction with our high school district for mentor support. Our district office TOSAs will also be utilized to provide support to create a seamless opportunity for any new teacher.
The teacher induction program has sufficient space, both physically and virtually, for leadership meetings, coach forums, and professional development opportunities as necessary. SMBSD has meeting spaces available at 708 S. Miller St., Santa Maria, CA 93454 at no charge to our program. Our teacher induction program uses Google Suite to store and share documentation of candidate progress. We have a variety of digital tools on Google Drive to support our induction candidates as they move through the induction process.
Plan to Teach Out candidates: SMBSD will re-engage in the current partnership with the San Luis County Office of Education Teacher Induction Program (SLOCOE). SMBSD is currently in a partnership with SLOCOE to provide induction to new SMBSD teachers. SMBSD has a positive relationship with SLOCOE and can easily return to them if needed. SLOCOE has given us assurance that our return would be welcomed.
