Some students are following a clear plan for their next steps after college, some are actively exploring option, and yet some are doing a bit of both. Our students are often confronted with numerous possibilities owing to the fact that the skills and knowledge gained by Psychology students are critical for success in a variety of career pathways. In fact, Psychology has been identified as a hub science due, in part, to its relevance to diverse fields. The APA has information that might help out students interested in exploring careers in psychological science.
With so many choices, Psychology students are encourage to take a strong proactive approach to thinking about their career choices. Engagement in practicum experiences or research labs are a great way to gain first-hand knowledge of different Psychology-related career options. Other suggestions are to talk with your Psychology faculty mentor or other academic advisor, explore subfields in Psychology, check out the American Psychological Association's information website with careers related to Psychology, visit SLU's Career Services Center, talk with professionals in areas of interest, and investigate what types of jobs openings there are (and what qualifications you might need to land similar positions in the future).
