About Geoscience at SJSU

Geologists work on human-Earth interactions ensuring we can better understand and respond to natural hazards like earthquakes, pollution, water shortages, sea level rise, and volcanic eruptions. Geologists are unraveling the planet’s history including the growth of mountains, the crushing forces of tectonic plates, the origins of ancient volcanic systems, and the fossil record of species extinction to understand how our Earth has changed through time and what that can teach us about our future. Faculty at SJSU help students to gain experience in all of these facets of the geosciences through research opportunities in their labs and external internship opportunities. Our small class sizes and active Geology Club mean you will get to know your classmates and your instructors.

The BS in Geology, offered by the Department of Geology, provides a flexible program that prepares students for admission to graduate programs in the geosciences and for entry-level positions such as: engineering, geophysical and geological firms; in hazardous materials, regulatory, environmental, ecological, or computer mapping firms; and in local, regional, and state government agencies like the California Geological Survey and United States Geological Survey.

The BS in Earth System Science (ESS), offered by the Department of Geology, is designed to broaden the perspectives of geoscience students by integrating an understanding of Earth’s biological and physical systems with interdisciplinary, solutions-oriented investigations of the human dimensions of sustainability. The Earth System Science degree will prepare students for career options including geohazard assessment, environmental geology, climate change and environmental remediation, water resource management, geoscience consulting, Earth Science teaching, and other career opportunities that center the societal-Earth connection.
