Evaluating

Volunteer Evaluation...

Finally, Lisa Gallegos stated that formally evaluating volunteers was critical. This is a great opportunity once a year to sing your volunteers’ praises. Equally importantly, the evaluation process motivates the definition of what measures the volunteers will be expected to meet and then vets how well each volunteer has done meeting these measures. Volunteers that are not meeting the basic expectations of the organization should not be allowed to continue on. Allowing volunteers who are either incapable or unwilling to meet the needs of their role are not helpful to the organization nor the population it serves. This is not necessarily a termination of the relationship of the organization with the volunteer. At times, it can serve to redefine the volunteer’s duties or perhaps find a new assignment the volunteer can be successful at. The key is to have a formal (even if brief) set of standards coupled with a process that all volunteers are subject to.
