Knowing how to effectively attract and retain volunteers will be a cornerstone of the reading centers. Dunn et al. (2015) state that, “Volunteering is a global phenomenon and a critical social resource for community and non-profit organisations [sic]. For example, 64.5 million people volunteered 7.9 billion hours in 2012 in the United States, equating to $175 billion” (p. 427). The value volunteers will bring to the table is critical to many non-profit ventures including Catholic Charities of Oregon.
