Lab Mission

ARMS Lab aims to conduct research projects on the design, control, and autonomy of assistive and medical robotics including lower-limb and upper-limb exoskeletons, and smart walkers for safe, compliant, and intelligent interaction with the human. The general goal of ARMS Lab is to systematize the major characterizations of human-robot interaction including 1) robot autonomy & human authority, 2) system stability & HRI safety, and 3) task performance.

April 17, 2024: Dr. Sharifi was selected as one of SJSU's honorees in 2023 due to his invention in the field of assistive robotics. (link)

April 15, 2024: Students at ARMS Lab received the "Most Innovative Project" award in the SJSU's College of Engineering Showcase 2024. They showcased 6 products in the field of assistive robotics for the lower and upper extremities. (link)

March 7, 2024: Dr. Sharifi serves as a topic organizer for the ASME International Design Engineering Technical Conferences & Computers and Information in Engineering Conference (IDETC-CIE). 

February 20, 2024: Sanad Shabbar received the 2024-2025 Research and Innovation Student RSCA Fellowship from the SJSU Office of Research. (link)

December 28, 2023: Anubhav Sharma and Jerry Lopez completed their master's projects on the design & fabrication, and motion planning & control of a smart walker. (link)

November 29, 2023: Dr. Sharifi is selected as an Associate Editor for the ASME Journal of Medical Diagnostics and Therapy. 

November 22, 2023: The first prototype of a hand exoskeleton is tested successfully by Ezekiel John Saldajeno, Rubin Gonsalves, and Yoseph Chaka at ARMS Lab

November 1, 2023: Three paper presentations at the ASME's International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition (IMECE) in New Orleans, USA, on the design and development of the knee, ankle, and upper limb exoskeletons under the topic of Rehabilitation Robotics. (link

October 30, 2023: Troy Schmidt and Avadh Vanparia have been selected as Davidson Student Scholars (DSS) of the SJSU College of Engineering in Fall 2023

October 4, 2023: First experiment with the EXO-H3. Successfully tested in step-by-step and continuous walking motions. (link)

August 15, 2023: Josiah Kligmann, Ana Patricia Olmos Fuenates, and Maxim Arshinov from different community colleges completed their internship in the summer of 2023 with their wonderful poster presentations on Insole Sensor Data Profile for Control of Assistive Technologies and Enhancing Upper Limb Exoskeleton by Running Tests and Fixing Technical Issues to Prevent Sudden Motor Jumps. May 17, 2023: Tiancheng Cheng and Jose Jaime Esquivel Patricio successfully completed their master's projects on the ankle-foot exoskeleton and mechatronics development for exoskeletons. (link)

May 16, 2023: Dr. Sharifi received an NSF award from the Disability and Rehabilitation Engineering (DARE) program for Enhancing The Autonomy and Safety of Lower-Limb Exoskeletons to Assist Humans in Locomotion and Other Activities.  (link)

April 24, 2023: ARMS Lab participated in the SJSU Research Week DEMO DAY university-wide event showcasing research and innovation to public visitors. Many visitors showed great interest in all the projects demonstrated at the booth. (link)

April 13, 2023: The upper limb exoskeleton team received The Most Engaging Project award at the SJSU College of Engineering showcase event. The smart walker, hip, knee, and ankle lower limb exoskeleton projects also participated and received significant attention from the audience. (link)
