The newly established Balangay Sailing Club (BSC) through its advisor and cadet leaders cascaded club existence and rationale to entire SMET formally marking their first institutional publicity last February 13.
Aimed to interest cadets, the campaign was opened with the BSC advisor Patrick Ruiz’s sharing of the history of sailing, that Filipinos originally came from the sailor ancestors which everyone should be proud of.
Teekay Training Officer, Mr. Ray M. Marticion, highlighted the importance and benefits being part of the team – learning the necessary skills that can be used onboard the ship such as seamanship skills during boat maintenance and navigation skills on sailing like understanding the direction of the winds, flow of currents and other knowledge in meteorology.
He added that this knowledge and experience in sailing can be the edge of a cadet among others in the maritime industry which was proven effective as the school attracts more companies because of sailing as now part of the curriculum.
Some of the BSC members headed by the Skipper E/C Renz Kivin Ramasasa presented videos from activities, event involvements and pieces of training conducted by the club and shared their experiences on sailing that boost their confidence.
“I realized that sailing is not only a club activity, but it will also a big help for us cadets to prepare ourselves when we go on board,” expressed by D/C Reneir Suralta, one of the newly registered cadets in the club.
