The term “LAYAG” was coined from both Bisaya and Tagalog word which means a sail or a piece of fabric attached to a boat and arranged such that it causes the wind to drive the boat along. The LAYAG symbolizes the amazing maritime industry of the Philippines, as it will be magnified through the country's rich maritime history.
Basically, this LAYAG – the official online publication of SMET will contain all our relevant activities and experiences as we go along our sail towards becoming future leaders.
Magazine, newsletter, tabloid or any sort of publication serves as an outlet for an individual to harness their creativity, ideas and even develop critical thinking skills. This medium of information provides substantial benefit and is a perfect tool to allow responsible expression, challenging of ideas, shaping one's opinion and perspective, peer-to-peer influence and much more which partake during the process.
With the utilization of such medium, easy access of information, news updates, fun facts, statistics and the likes are at hand. One cannot deny the fact that the person involved can learn essential things specifically in writing and speaking skills, giving them the edge in the future. The ability to communicate, be it verbal or nonverbal is a vital skill in any workplace environment particularly in a maritime industry setting. Hence, the formulation of LAYAG which is an online publication of SMET was realized with the vision of molding cadets into future leaders with great potentials in both oral and written context.
The online publication will also be a platform for discovery and exploration about marine profession which consequently provides essential ideas to cadets.
Furthermore, the purpose of the online publication is to bring the brand of SMET’s Future Leaders Program through showcasing their achievements and activities which make them distinct from other maritime schools across the country.
Finally, this will help promulgate the Filipino seafarers' identity enriched with cultural heritage and legacy from the past by tracing the history behind the Balangay boat in Butuan which implies the Filipino expertise in sailing, proving them that Filipinos are naturally born seafarers even before the epoch of foreign colonization.
With LAYAG – the Official Online Publication of SMET, the following objectives are set to be achieved:
•To provide accurate, timely, and relevant information about events and news to the campus community.
•To use digital platforms, including social media, websites, and multimedia, to reach and engage a broader audience as part of the 21st Century Learning Design.
•To encourage participation in campus events and activities through engaging storytelling and coverage.
•To promote the achievements of the cadets of SJIT and the institution's excellence.
•To provide updates such as news and information about the Future Leaders of SJIT that will be presented to incoming visitors, shipping companies, and guests.
•To mentor and train new cadets to ensure the continuity and growth of campus journalism.
•To build collaborative relationships with other student organizations to enhance journalistic efforts.
•To enhance extended communication skills, and mold students' creativity and self-directed responsibility.
•To highlight and trace the history of why Filipinos are naturally born seafarers/mariners.
