D/C Jessie Estillore Torreon has significantly elevated LAYAG Publication through various roles and initiatives. As Editor-in-Chief for the 2023-2024 academic year, his leadership broadened the publication's scope and reach. He introduced the KAULAYAW SA PAGTUKLAS segment and conceptualized the literary folio, WORD WEAVING.
Committed to journalistic integrity, he promoted adherence to LAYAG’s policies and focused on organizational growth. He created new positions, recruited talented students, and emphasized mentorship through workshops in graphics, writing, photography, and broadcasting.
His efforts extended to fostering relationships with external parties, such as the SSC and other publications. As SSC Multimedia Head, he enriched LAYAG’s content with external journalism works. During his tenure, he established a new LAYAG archive, created IDs and Pins, and implemented various workshops, enhancing operational efficiency and staff identity. His contributions have set a high standard for future generations, ensuring LAYAG's continued growth and innovation.
D/C Jil Kim Peñas, LAYAG's third Editor-In-Chief for the Academic Year 2022-2023. During his term as EIC, he added new segments such as the CADET OF THE MONTH, SEA STORIES, INSPOSUNDAY, LITERARY PIECES, and KAULAYAW SA PAGTUKLAS Notably, he expanded LAYAG's journalistic horizons by incorporating broadcasting and video précis for events, ushering in a new era of multimedia storytelling. Furthermore, he added the Broadcasting Team and divided Videographers from Photographers under the Documentation Team—streamlined media coverage and enhanced the standard of visual narrative. Under his leadership, LAYAG became a dynamic platform for diverse voices and innovative storytelling, setting sail toward new journalistic frontiers.
Adaptability and resilience are essential in student journalism. D/C John Marco Aguilera, Editor-in-Chief of SMET LAYAG Publication from 2021 to 2022, exemplified these traits. Amidst unprecedented challenges, he guided the journal through significant shifts, shaping its history. One standout achievement was the introduction of MARINEKNOWS, a segment addressing the needs of marine cadets. Marco's vision and the senior editors brought this project to life, filling a crucial content gap. Leading during the COVID-19 pandemic, Marco faced a reduced team, with most members in online classes. Despite this, he maintained a presence with updated content and online events, keeping the connection with the student body alive. Additionally, he strengthened ties with the main campus, expanding its reach and visibility. His tenure is defined by perseverance, innovation, and leadership, leaving a lasting legacy in LAYAG Publication history.
D/C Herobill Jardio served as the pioneer Editor-in-Chief of SMET LAYAG Publication from 2018 to 2021. During his tenure, he demonstrated visionary leadership, crafting a compelling proposal to establish the publication and adeptly navigating the virtual landscape by managing its Facebook page and overseeing the creation of its website. His adept navigation of the digital landscape included managing the publication's Facebook page and overseeing the creation of its website with collaborators like Eugene Prado and Joshua Racho. Under his guidance, the publication excelled, becoming SJIT's premier college publication and receiving official certification from Maritime Dean, Captain Edric Aspilla. Noteworthy achievements include organizing team-building activities and initiating the LAYAG literary competition, demonstrating his innovative spirit and dedication to shaping the future.
