As part of the recently founded Balangay Marina Sailing and Yacht Club (BMSYC) and SJIT's Balangay Sailing Club (BSC), the SJIT — Maritime Education and Training (SMET) cadets extended their support to the community and participated in the events of Nasipit's 3rd Dunggo Festival last September 28.
The events were the fluvial parade early in the morning and the first official regatta in the afternoon.
The said municipality, where the SMET campus is situated and just a few kilometers from the home of the balangays, also have a rich maritime culture embedded in its name. With the name "Dunggo" as its festival, which means to dock, clearly implies Nasipit has a deep history with regards to traversing the waters.
Along with the cadets were their instructor, Patrick Ruiz and the regatta facilitator, Michael Storer which is also the Oz Goose boat designer. The town's mayor was glad to have sailing as part of their budding festival. He said that it is nice for them to be informed that sailing can be a good start in promoting tourism of the place.
"It is nice to be part of the activities within the community to help promote our club and gain more exposure," said Renz Kivin Ramasasa, skipper of the newly founded sailing club within the school.
