To give salutation to the industry which drives the world's economy, Saint Joseph Institute of Technology- Maritime Education and Training (SMET) campus joined and supported the National Maritime Week Celebration which took place September 24-28, 2018.
The event was anchored on the theme, “IMO 70: Our Heritage: Better Shipping for a Better Future” which was coined by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), a maritime search and rescue service of the country led this year's week-long celebration.
The celebration commenced with a thanksgiving mass and floral offering at Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Butuan City. It was then followed with simultaneous blowing of horn and dressing of ships and a motorcade attended by the maritime-affiliated bodies such as MARINA, Maritime Police and local shipping lines in the country.
Meanwhile, Captain Nestor A. Almero, the college dean of SMET delivered a speech as the guest speaker during the opening program held at Robinson's Mall Butuan.
He asserted how IMO's role influence the shipping industry as United Nations' specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. Furthermore, he emphasized the Filipino's large contribution to the country's economic development despite risking themselves in an environment wherein mental and physical stress are prevalent.
Other activities like coastal cleanup, mangrove planting, modified basic safety training and scubasurero were also held in the week-long celebration to promote safety and security of life and property at sea.
