Despite having little time to practice due to hectic schedule, the maritime academy still pulled off the win on one of the literary contest in the SJIT's 47th foundation day last September 28 with the theme: "Soaring high through Sports and arts."
Kevin Besana, a marine engineering student and also a Teekay cadet, clinched the first spot in the Spoken Word Poetry contest among different colleges which some of them focuses on literary forms.
"Confidence is my key of winning the contest," he said. "I did my best and it paid off."
His piece titled 'Nag-iisa ako' which is related to the given theme moved the audiences as well as the judges with its 'patama' and 'pakilig' lines that tells about the student's anxiousness about life and how SJIT changed it.

"It was nice because the flow of the story is unpredictable," said Nino Rey Villarta , one of the audience.
Ms. Suzy Jean Dagani, one of the instructors in Maritime Academy was impressed of the performance given by his coachee.
"I can say that the word fit for his performance was stupendous," said by Ma'am Dagani.
Also, only Kevin from the maritime academy won in the literary contest in the said event out of all of the categories.
Moreover, after winning this event, the MA college also said that this will be a good stepping stone for years to come.
Kevin performed his piece again in the said school's Student's night last September 29.
