Prior to the actual fire-drill set to happen on the next day, selected major course instructors taught cadets about the working principles of fire extinguishers including types of fires and the proper usage of the equipment last Tuesday, February 11.
Second Officer Romeo Calonia discussed the fire triangle and its three elements – oxygen, fuel and heat with which extinguishing happens upon the omission of one element prohibiting ignition. “To extinguish a fire, you need to eliminate at least one element in the fire triangle because once some of the element was eliminated then the fire will be brought down immediately,” Calonia said.
This was followed by Second Engineer Wyndle Rivera’s demonstration of the proper handling of fire extinguishers as well as the specific contents of each type. For fast recalling, he advised to use the mnemonics – PASS (Pull, Aim, Squeeze and Swipe) for everyone’s convenience. Encountering the basics of firefighting, assigned cadets were now set to actualize and simulate their learnings on the fire drill that will happen a day afterward.
