After school 20 adults and 25 kids gathered in the farm to turn this old wire basket...
.....into a giant strawberry pot! The City of Maribyrnong provided the pot, the soil, the expert (Scott) and a tasty afternoon tea (thanks Pip). The pot has a reserve of water at the bottom so it will be self watering over summer. A great sustainability project!
Here's how we did it:
First Scott helped us line the basket with some black fabric, then we spread out the giant black plastic liner. (Hope we didn't lose anyone under there!)
Next we pushed down the plastic... and almost lost a parent!
After Scott attached the pipes (to let the water in and out of the reservoir at the bottom) we started loading in the stones (scoria) for the bottom layer.
Then it was time for a layer of fabric to keep the soil from mixing with the stones. We all went back to digging to get buckets of soil to fill up the pot.
Scott explained the special qualities of the plants he brought. No strawberries yet because it's not warm enough. We'll plant them later. Finally we planted and watered.
Thanks to all the families who worked so hard! Keep watching as the students will keep working on this over the next few weeks. Carol.
