Term 1 5/6 identity projects

February 21, 2018

This term 5/6 are learning about our own identity. For this project we are learning how the garden and our care for the environment is linked with our identity. This photo is of our group showing expressions that show a part of our identity. Milee

Hammering signs

This is term 1 and grade 5/6 is learning about our identity. The farm connects with our identity and the plants identity too. My partner and I were making signs so people could know what plants they were.

Mulching

The job we picked was to mulch the garden bed. It had smelly plants like garlic chives, thyme, sage and oregano. First we had to water the garden bed. When we did the finger test is was really dry under the top layer so we had to water more. When it was watered properly we got the old straw and put it on the soil. The straw mulch will stop the water from drying out again. Absalat, Daniel and James.

Moving Hay bales

21/02/18

At the farm we were moving hay bales. The children who did it was Richard,Niko and Ralph. It was a bit hard to move the hay bales. With the hay bales we were making a circle for every body to sit on we got them from behind the shed and used a wheelbarrow. We are creating the St.Johns identity by building the farm/garden.

The Sheep Manure

28/02/18

Today we were using the sheep manure to make a batch of soil healthy soil. Today we learnt that soil and the environment must be healthy so that the plants will be healthy. Its like children and adults because children and adults need to have a healthy environment to be healthy themselves.

Potatoes 28/02/18

Today the 5/6 identity group went to the garden. Me and Absalat harvested potatoes from a pot. While we were harvesting we found worms and bugs , so we put them into the worm bin. It took a lot of effort and strength to dig the dirt because it was really dry.We discovered that we are very strong and that links with our identity. At the end we counted the potatoes and we had harvested 58 potatoes.

In another activity we found out fun facts about plants and how it connects with our identity. One of the facts that we learned were beans and alfalfa are in the same family because the shape of the flower and how the leafs come in bundles of three. Plants come in families like we come in families. Plants in the same family look similar, just like we might look like people in our family.

March 14 Planting garlic

Today my group went to the farm and my friend and I had a task to do. First we had to put some sheep manure to make the soil good , we mixed it in so the soil was soft. Then we had to choose which garlic to plant. We chose the big ones because they will grow the biggest garlic. This reminded us of what we've been talking about with identity. Just like we inherit our parent's behavior or looks, we hope our garlic will be big because we planted big cloves.

March 14 Planting

Today Niko,Timothy and Richard were planting seeds in punnets. The seeds were jumping jacks, lettuce Gloria and dill Hercules. We needed to be careful with the seeds because the are very small. We had to do small holes not big holes because the seeds can't be deep or the seeds won't grow. Other skills were teamwork + organisation skills.
