The evening started nicely. Then came the rain, followed by a whipping wind. The drive to the Chesapeake conference center was a little difficult because an area on Ferrell Parkway was flooded. The other drivers went through the high water anyway. We hesitated for a moment but then went along. After that, the drive was easy for the rest of the way.
We arrived at the venue surprised to see many came sooner than we did, in spite of the weather conditions. By their standards, we were late. As we entered the conference hall, we were amazed to see it beautifully organized. The DJ, the rostrum, the tables, and the bar were in perfect placement ready to offer anything one desired. What a place to spend an evening with friends, we thought.
The guests took advantage of a short wait to enjoy drinks from the bar, while the DJ played healthy and enticing tunes. Soon the wheels of the program began to spin and the night with its entire glory moved on with ease.
Yeah, buddy! The fun was about to start. The Masters of Ceremony - Reynaldo Fanugao and Veneracion Cachaper gave a brief overview of what to expect throughout the evening hours. Then both (U.S. and P.I.) national anthems were played. Like every good citizen, we knew what to do. On cue, we all stood up and acted patriotically.
Thereafter, Thomas Cecil, the outgoing president was now ready to deliver his opening remarks. The highlight of his speech was a summary of his accomplishments as ZAI president. Our members are grateful for everything that he has done for ZAI over the years.
Once his speech was over, it was time to say grace for dinner. Edith Alvior led the prayer to thank the Lord for the food we were about to share.
Following dinner was dancing, and more dancing. Some of the guests would have liked to be on the dance floor but their aching bodies makes dancing a painful prospect. However, they were having a good time watching. Others continued to move around the hall searching for old friends who happened to be in attendance. Some were lucky, while others were unsuccessful, making them choose to hang out by the bar area.
By this time, our most able Erlinda Lazo was ready to introduce Dr. Christopher W. Asuncion, M.D., the Inducting Officer for the incoming officers (listed on the left), for his inspirational Talk.
The doctor talked about his years growing up in New Jersey, his career in the US Air Force Medical Corps, and on to his medical practice in Hampton Roads as key points in his speech. He also stressed the importance of bringing up children to be aware of their roots, and to learn about their cultural heritage under adult supervision at an early age. He mentioned his two sons who are active participants in the Fil-Am language and art classes as an example.
Soon after, as he said, "I, Joseph Alvior, do solemnly swear ...", his life begins a new phase of leadership and respectability. Those are the most rewarding and the most gratifying elements one can experience when stepping on a plate of responsibility. He will also take ownership of ZAI in the process. (Fellow ZAI members are going to make him think of staying on as president until his social security check started knocking on his door. Haha!) Our congratulations to Joseph and the Alvior family as they travel down the road of greater challenges while needing a bundle of patience and understanding along the way.

Meanwhile, we continue to burp and sip coffee as our entertainment started to take shape nicely. Ladies in red blouses and black skirts, men wearing white shirts and black pants slowly populated the dance floor. Then, the music came on - Quiero! Quiero! Ay-yay-yay! And so, the evening was never the same afterwards.

Our thanks to Nelly Abad for patiently teaching the dancers their step arrangements to perfection. As a result, the Ballroom Dancers of Virginia and the ZAI Dance Group were rewarded with a flawless performance. In addition, Carmen Thiergardt and Jay Yan need not be denied their due honors.
We are proud of you and everyone else for your unselfish efforts in making this affair a successful one. It will be a moment to remember for a long time to come.
