Archie Loeb was the son of Russian immigrants, Hyman and Sarah Loeb, who settled in Columbia County. He was born April 14, 1921, and died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015.
He served his country in World War II, then worked for a brief time in Chicago before moving to Watertown in the 1940s to “help” his brother, Bill, in the family business — recycling of scrap metal.
Their father started the family business in 1923 as a junk dealer in Columbus dealing in metals, rags, paper and rubber. Under the leadership of Bill and Archie the company evolved into one of the best, safest and most respected scrap metal processors in the country, obtaining ISO and OHSAS certifications and offering honorable employment to hundreds of employees throughout the years. The business today operates yards in four cities in the Midwest.
Archie took Institute Scrap Iron and Steel seminars at Michigan State, Kellogg Institute and UW-Wisconsin NASMI courses. He also had a lot of hands-on learning.
In 2008 the city of Watertown named the Main Street bridge after him.

The Grand Prix was rear ended by a pickup and sent spinning into oncoming traffic, causing three more vehicles to crash. Two of the four people in the Pontiac, 15-year-old Abigail Kendall and 15-year-old Brianna Gesino, both from Anna, died at scene.
Today administrators confirmed that all of the teenagers in the Grand Prix had ties to the Anna Independent School District. A statement was issued that said, in part:
Two passengers in a Ford Focus that was hit by several of the vehicles, 51-year-old passenger Julie Trimble and 51-year-old Wayne Trimble, both from Ivanhoe, were also killed. A four-year-old girl in the car survived, but suffered serious injuries and was transferred from a hospital in Collin County to a local Children’s Medical Center.
Of the nine people hurt three were immediately taken to Medical City Plano and the six others to Medical Center of McKinney. “We’ve got multiple people transported to various medical facilities,” said DPS spokesman Lt. Lonny Haschel.
Officials say their investigation into the cause of the crash is going to be exhaustive. “We want to make sure we do a complete and thorough job with the investigation and again there’s a lot of parts to it,” Lt. Haschel. “So, these folks are very focused and they’re going to remain that way until they can piece everything together.”

The Pontiac was first rear-ended by a Dodge pickup, causing the Pontiac to spin into oncoming traffic and hit a Ford Focus traveling in the other direction. The Ford Focus then spun into oncoming traffic and was struck by a Ford F-450 utility truck. A Subaru heading southbound was also struck by the Pontiac and rolled into a ditch.
Two of the teens in the Pontiac, Zoe Wilson, 16, and Madison Kenney, 16, were injured and taken to Medical Center McKinney. Anna ISD said Kendall, 15, was a student and Gesino, 15, was a former student at Anna High School.

Khan, a 31-year-old University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee student and businessman, was reported missing Wednesday, the day he told his family he was showing his car to prospective buyers and the day he didn’t show up for dinner at his parents’ house in Mequon to celebrate the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
According to court documents filed Monday, it was also the day Zoellick and his girlfriend drove from Watertown to Khan’s home near the UWM campus, kidnapped him, returned to Watertown and killed him.
