“DONALD (PETER), WHERE’S YOUR TROOSERS” [SUBTITLE: PETER GETS LEGLESS]!
We are used to strange things happening at croquet tournaments hosted by York Croquet Club but the loss of one participant’s trousers at the York Country Doubles (held on 19th/20th August) sets a new benchmark! There was a thought that they might have eloped with his thermal vest which also temporarily went missing but the vest was soon found and returned to its rightful owner. The owner in question was Peter Hamilton from Como Croquet Club.
In fairness to Peter, it was not the whole of his trousers that went missing (we might have noticed), just the zip-on legs. So, if you happen to come across a pair of trouser-less legs, they probably belong to Peter’s now legless trousers and he is very keen to reunite them (but note the postscript).
But, we digress – the croquet.
Blessed with perfect weather, beautifully prepared lawns and York Croquet Club’s famed hospitality (notably, but not only, the catering), the scene was set for a great weekend of croquet – and it delivered! Undoubtedly, the feature was the final between Brett and Janine McHardy from Forrest Park Croquet Club and Alan Sands and Jennifer Brand from Como and Cambridge Croquet Clubs. The highly tactical battle held the spectators rivetted until Brett and Janine finally won 7-6.
Club Reporter – Eric Ayling
Postscript: Peter tells me that his trouser legs have now materialised but, hey, why spoil a good story!

Hi everyone
Here is edition 7 and the last of these newsletters.
Croquet Clubhouse
Have you seen the progress of the decking? It won’t be long and it will be all finished.
Unfortunately, we experienced a bit of graffiti last week. The culprits had a limited vocabulary. This has been painted out.
Playing Croquet
The State Government is relaxing the rules to a maximum of 20 people as from Monday 18th May. We will be able to have up to 20 people attend our sessions from then.
Golf Croquet sessions will continue on Monday and Wednesday 9.00 a.m. start. We will start play on Fridays at 3.00 p.m. from this Friday (15th May). It gets cold out there when it is approaching 6.00pm.
Association Croquet is being played on Thursday mornings at 9.00 a.m.
We will not have the sausage sizzle again until at least September.
Social distancing of 1.5 metres must be observed. Use of hand sanitizer is recommended, and players are to wash their hands after each game.
If using the box containing the coloured balls to work out who is playing with who and where, only one person to take out the balls and to tell the others their colour. The ball selector is to wash or sanitize their hands immediately after the draw.
These precautions will help prevent other diseases like influenza etc.
Use of the clubrooms is still not permitted, but the toilets are open and are available. If using the kitchen for tea etc. keep the maximum to 2 people in there, and bring the cuppa outside. Afterwards, everything must be washed using dishwashing liquid and hot water. Use the kettle, and wash the handle.
The sanitizing hand wash in the kitchen is not a leave on sanitizer. You will need to wash it off with water.
Markets Stall.
This is still on the agenda. We will have a stall at the Peace Park Markets when they get going again. If anyone has anything they wish to donate to the club and which we can sell on the stall, please store it until this gets going. If the storage is a problem, please let me know. We will not have the stall before September.

The final bit of the decking on the clubhouse is in the process of being built. Kay, Barbara and Dorothy Fairclough have applied the bituminous paint to the structural timber, and Denis and Eric joined them to oil the decking boards. Work has started on putting these timbers into place.

With the State Government slightly relaxing the rules, we are now able to play croquet again.
Maximum of 10 people. Any more than 10 people turn up, and they will have to leave the premises. Members have first priority.
We have started sessions on Monday and Wednesday 9.00 a.m. start, and Friday 4.00 p.m. start.

NEWSLETTER
NO. 5 24th April 2020
Hi everyone
Here is edition 5 of our newsletter, the Anzac Day edition.
It is a pity Anzac Day parades and services are not open to the public this year. Anzac Day means a great deal to many people, and this year they will feel at a loss. It meant a lot to my family. We attended no less than 3 Anzac Day services on Anzac day, plus we often went to the Dawn Service at the Perth War Memorial.
Dan Ryan
I saw Dan Ryan at the croquet club yesterday. He was working on the lawn mower. Dan has been doing an excellent job keeping the lawn looking lovely. Thanks Dan. You are being well appreciated.
Eric’s Bit:
The steel stumps for the northern deck extension were concreted in place on Monday afternoon – big thanks to Dan, Denis and Rod. Peter delivered the timber for the decking on Thursday. A “painting team” is being organized so that painting of the structural timber with bituminous paint can be done. With a bit of luck and continued dry weather, it should be possible to have the deck in place some time in the next couple of weeks.
We are also looking at what else needs to be done to finish the clubhouse e.g. putting the venting system in the toilets and finishing the urinal. I will keep you abreast of developments through Dorothy’s newsletter.
Thank you Eric.

The following letter was sent to the WA clubs by the secretary of CroquetWest, Caryll Marshall.
She has asked that it be sent to all of our members. What better way to send it to you than through our own newsletter.
Hi All
Well we never thought this would happen. When all croquet clubs put down their mallets and retire home to do housework or gardening. Well some of you may have done this.
For me I leave the dirty work to Max.
Hope you are all travelling well. That you are not getting ill
.I, in particular want to be back on the courts again playing all of you, so I can learn more sneaky tactics that some players are really good at.
When this crisis is all over, I hope that you will all return in good spirits and look forward to playing croquet again, socialising and getting lots of fresh air.
If any of you are feeling lonely or not coping, I am quite happy for you to email me or phone me. I may not be of much help but at least I will listen.
Better still phone a friend who cares. (Joke)
None of us know when the Corona virus will disappear for good, so for now all we can do is stay safe, look at the housework and just look, the dust will be still be there long after croquet begins again.
Watch your favourite shows on TV., read books or cook or whatever you like doing in this spare time
There is updates on croquet play on the Croquetwest Website.
A bit of laughter for us seniors
There was in a long line at 6:45 am today at our Coles supermarket that opened at 7 for seniors only.
A young man came from the parking lot and
tried to cut in at the front of the line, but an old
lady beat him back into the parking lot with her cane.
He returned and tried to cut in again, but an old man punched him in the gut, then kicked him to the ground and rolled him away.
As he approached the line for the 3rd time he said, "If you don't let me unlock the door, you'll never get in there."
Stay Safe and keep well
See you all back on the croquet courts

Hi everyone
Here is edition 4 of our newsletter.
Did you enjoy Easter? It was certainly a bit different this year.
I am still looking for items to put in our newsletter. Any contributions are welcome.
Eric’s Bit:
Croquet Club Building
Some further news on the building front. I have checked with the police and, provided we are not turning it into a social gathering, we can proceed with the building of the deck. I will provide more detail in a separate email.
The stumps have been reset (they were set too high) and the holes deepened. All is now ready for concrete pouring. I will get the concrete pre-mix from Peter Bush and cement powder from the hardware. The plan is to do the concreting next week. Again, I will provide more detail (and a request for help) in a separate email.
Thankyou Eric.

I am sure I am not alone when I say I am looking forward to being able to play croquet again. Unfortunately, the ban on sports clubs is still in place with $1,000 on the spot fines for the players, and $5,000 on the spot fines for the club. Oh well, I still have cross stitch and macramé to play around with. :)

NO. 3. 9th April 2020
Hi everyone
Here is edition 3 of our newsletter. The Easter edition.
We hope you all are able to enjoy a quiet, peaceful Easter. We hope you are able to be in contact with your loved ones, even if it is by phone or electronically. Stay Safe.
Being asked to stay at home, and not being allowed out of the wheatbelt zone, it is going to be a little bit difficult to find items to put in our newsletter. Any contributions are welcome.
Croquet
The courts look fantastic. The garden is also looking very good. A couple of plants began to show signs of stress, and it was necessary to do a little bit of work on them to save them. They are on their way back to good health.
Aiir Conditioner
The air conditioner has now been connected to the power and it works. I have turned off the power at switch near the section outside the building, so when we are ready to use it, the power needs to be turned on again.
Rules are: Do not turn on the air conditioner until after the first game. Then turn it on so the room can get cool or warm by the time we have finished the second game. Turn off before going out for the third game.

The following was sent to me to put in the newsletter.
Doctor
A man goes to the doctor, worried about his wife’s temper.
The Doctor says “what’s the problem?”
The man says “Every day my wife seems to lose her temper for no reason. It scares me.”
The Doctor says “I have a cure for that. When it seems that your wife is getting angry, just take a glass of water and start swishing it in your mouth. Just swish and swish but don’t swallow it until she either leaves the room or calms down.”
Two weeks later the man comes back to the doctor looking fresh and reborn.
The man says “Doctor, that was a brilliant idea! Every time my wife started losing it, I swished with water. I swished and swished, and she calmed right down! How does a glass of water do that?”
The doctor says “The water itself does nothing. It’s keeping your mouth shut that does the trick.”
Thanks Michael.

Hi everyone
Here is edition 2 of our newsletter.
Being asked to stay at home, and not being allowed out of the wheatbelt zone, it is going to be a little bit difficult to find items to put in our newsletter. Any contributions are welcome.
Croquet
A couple of tournaments worth mentioning:
Western Australia had several players, including Eric Ayling, competing in the national men’s AC (Association Croquet) and national women’s AC tournaments in Brisbane. Although WA did not win either of these two tournaments, we sure gave them a run for their money. Sort of.
Still in Brisbane, Western Australia also had a team in the AC Eire Cup. This tournament is interstate with every state playing against every other state. I will not mention where WA came, but we will do better next year.
York had a team in The Summer Nights Golf Croquet (GC) Tournament in Mt. Lawley which ran each Tuesday night from 11th February until 17th March. It was supposed to be 24th March but the last week was cancelled due to Government restrictions. The Yorkies team, consisting of Dan Ryan, Denis Bull and Dorothy Bull came second after a team called “Snakes” from Forrest Park.
Health and Safety
What more can I say. Keep up social distancing, stay at home and wash your hands thoroughly and frequently.

Eric’s Bit
Some good news on the building front – we have been issued with a building permit by the Shire for the northern deck. Hopefully, we will be able to get work underway in the near future.
Also, you may or may not have noticed the new plants growing on the river bank behind the clubhouse. It was one of the many conditions of the original permit that the river bank be revegetated. We understand that this was a condition imposed by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation.
Anyway, Pat McGregor and I planted about 40 seedings (donated by the Wildflower Society) last winter. 7 subsequently died and have been recently replaced. With a bit of luck, at least some will be flowering this spring.
Thanks for the update Eric
The management committee has discussed the idea of having a stall at the Peace Park Markets. When this crisis is over we will go ahead with this idea.
As John and Chris Pert are closing their book shop down, they have offered the club some of the remaining books so we can raise money from them when we hold the stall. Thanks John and Chris. This is really appreciated by everyone.
Eric Ayling needs some boxes (not too big) so he can pick the books up. Anyone able to help please drop the boxes off, preferably before Tuesday at the front verandah of Eric’s house – 4 Broome Street, York. We will store the books until the markets are on again, and we can get a stall.
If anyone has any original ideas to keep the “over 70’s” active while we stay at home, and would like to share in the next newsletter, please send them to me by email – dbull@westnet.com.au.
Here is one:

Activity Man of house cleaning up mess.
Activity Lady of house is digging a large hole 6 foot deep in the garden.

YORK CROQUET CLUB
NEWSLETTER
NO. 1. 27th March 2020
Hi everyone
This newsletter is to keep everyone up to date and informed as to what we are doing at the croquet club.
Croquet
Unfortunately, due to *ugh* caronavirus we have had to close the club to normal sessions.
The Western Australian Government ruling is now that any sporting activity of 2 or more is not permitted. There are hefty fines. That means we can not play croquet with anyone else. You may practice alone if you wish.
Health and Safety
You have heard it a thousand times lately, but please wash your hands after any activity which involves touching surfaces like trolley handles, and money, which other people have touched. This nasty virus likes to hang around on surfaces for up to 3 days.
Under “house arrest”?
Well, that is what I have heard self isolation and home quarantining called.
If you are not allowed out, and not allowed to be in physical contact with anyone, but you need supplies or anything, please ring one of us and we will organize to get the goods to you.
Dorothy Bull 0407 082 557
Eric Ayling 9641 1136
And if you live in Beverley, and are in self isolation, ring Robyn Johnson on 0422 388 475
If you want to just have a chat because you are feeling lonely or down, once again ring one of the above people and if they are unable to chat to you, they will get another club member to contact you.
Anyone else wanting to have their names and phone numbers listed, please contact me and I will put it in the next newsletter.
The lawns
The lawns and garden will be maintained while we are on this forced break. That means when we go back to session play the courts will be in top condition.
The building
We hope to be able to get this completed soon. The air conditioner has been installed. Just waiting for the electrics to be completed.
Dishwasher
By the way. A very kind lady, Robyn Johnson, has donated a dishwasher to us. The heat in a dishwasher is hot enough to kill germs, while hot wash up water, which you are able to put your hands in, will not kill germs.
Fridges
The fridges have been emptied of perishable items. Biscuits, water and cool drinks are still in the fridge. There is no milk at the club at the moment. Both fridges have been turned off to conserve power.
If anyone has any news or hot gossip they want share in the next newsletter, please send it to me by email – dbull@westnet.com.au.

Dan Ryan with the Coring Machine he and Stuart Clare have been working with to improve the lawns.
Stuart Clare's Story
Ok let’s start from the beginning.
When myself and Dan started the job as green keepers we had a few issues we had to deal with.
First of all we had a major infestation of leather jackets and Black beetles.
This was found by myself after going to the club at night with a torch and having a look.
Most insects are active at night so best time to have a look.
We dealt with that problem with a black beetle granular insecticide and a insecticide liquid for the leather jackets.
To do with the lawn care we took a couple of core samples from the middle tram line and found the roots of the lawn where only getting about 30 mm under the ground.
So we put three seperate liquid sprays of Humic acid and spread granular microbes on the lawn.
Microbes will eat the bacteria under the soil and the humic acid is there as a food source for the microbes.
Then between Dan and myself we got the roller going and started rolling the courts.
We did a height level over the hole court and found a lot of differences in surface height so we rolled it till it came back to even height.
Dan made up a new prickle roller barrel and we set the spikes at 45 mm and started air rating the soil.
We changed out ten of the oldest sprinklers with new ones that I brought out of the states.
A lot of time and effort went into setting them up with the right size jets and spray pattens.
Once we got them sorted we started applying liquid fertiliser over the hole court
We then took another lot of core samples and found we where starting to see a lot of non wetting soilThat is a big problem that we have to deal with.
So by adding a soil wetter when we did our fertiliser spray we are now getting those non wetting patches under control.
Also by taking core samples again after a few treatments we found we had lowed the root mass of the lawn to 60 mm witch is what we need to make the moisture under the ground available to the plant.
So that leads us into the coring machine.
We found out by looking at the core samples again we could see the roots going down and hitting a hard pan under the ground and the roots of the plant where hitting that hard layer and going sideways.
So we cored the hole court to 100 mm to break up that hard pan and have a way to get the products that we are spraying on get down into the ground and break up the hard pan and let the roots go deeper into the soil profile.
Ok have to ask have I lost you yet ? Haha
So now we are sitting back and watching what the law is going to do before we put anything else on it.
So that’s about it for now.
The biggest thing that people forget about is there is no point looking at getting the lawn heathy when the soil is un heathy. Simple rule is : Happy heathy soil / happy healthy lawn.
30th November 2019
The new clubhouse was opened on 30th November by Eric Ayling, who has been club president for the last 3 years, and several times in the past. Eric was chosen to open the clubhouse to recognise the fact that the clubhouse means a lot to him, and he means a lot to the croquet club.
The Clubhouse was named The Peter Bailey Pavillion to recognise the work Peter has done in relation to the clubhouse over the last 7 years, including dealing with bureaucratic restrictions, and building the structure.
THE 2019 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Was held on Tuesday 29th October 2019.
Dorothy Bull was elected President, Kay Anderson was re-elected Secretary and Eric Ayling was elected Vice Present. The position of treasurer is still vacant.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The 2019 Annual General Meeting of the York Croquet Club will be held on Tuesday 29th October 2019, starting at 7.15 at the York Croquet Club House.
2019 OVER 65s TOURNAMENT
The annual Doug Fortescue Over 65s tournament was held on the weekend 16th to 17th March 2019.
The weekend started with a sausage sizzle on the evening of the 15th March, with club members and competition entrants having the opportunity to practice.
The format for the tournament had players paired up in doubles, without anyone playing with the same person twice over the weekend. Then one person from each pair took a coloured marble out of the box, and the two pairs with the same coloured marble then played against each other. This is a popular format. Athough players did not play with the same person twice during the weekend they certainly played against some players more than once, but not against the same doubles combination.
Helen Giles, once again, kindly made the delicious sandwiches for lunches on both days. Thank you Helen. There was an abundance of food available for players over the weekend. Pam Warner, Pat McGregor, Kay Anderson and her sister all helped with kitchen duties all weekend.
Saturday night dinner was a barbecue with lots of delicious salads and desserts, including Pam Warners "to die for" trifle.
The competition was won by David Williams, follow up John Doepel, third Maggie Cussell. Beverley Hoey received a wooden spoon for encouragement. This was her first tournament in croquet and she certainly played well.
10th December 2018
Dan Ryan made 2 wrought iron mallet stands for the club. It is handy to be able to place our mallets in the stand when we are waiting between games. It means we do not have to put our mallets on a hard surface, like concrete or bricks. The base of this stand is wood covered in vinyl. I have shown the centre peg, some hoops and balls as well as the mallets in the stand.

YORK CROQUET CLUB SUFFERED SOME DAMAGE DURING STORM
The storm which hit York on 29th January 2011 removed part of the roof from the York Croquet Club clubhouse. Two of the overhead lights were dislodged, and pieces of guttering were blown off. Some of the bushes were also damaged. All the damage has been repaired, and the bushes trimmed. We consider ourselves lucky we did not suffer more damage.

President Eric Ayling presenting Pat McGregor with the life membership badge and certificate.
On New Years Eve, 31st December 2009, The York Croquet Club held their usual New Years Eve Party to welcome 2010.
This year the party was anything but usual because we awarded our longest serving member, Pat McGregor, with life membership. Pat joined York Croquet Club in 1983 and has given exceptional service to the club. Good onya Pat!
10 croquet players from Cambridge Club came along to our party and we all had a fantastic time, with music, food and fun croquet games. The first games for 2010 was played after midnight.
Old age and treachery will overcome youth and skill!
