2019 OVER 65s TOURNAMENT
The weekend started with a sausage sizzle on the evening of the 15th March, with club members and competition entrants having the opportunity to practice.
The format for the tournament had players paired up in doubles, without anyone playing with the same person twice over the weekend. Then one person from each pair took a coloured marble out of the box, and the two pairs with the same coloured marble then played against each other. This is a popular format. Athough players did not play with the same person twice during the weekend they certainly played against some players more than once, but not against the same doubles combination.
Helen Giles, once again, kindly made the delicious sandwiches for lunches on both days. Thank you Helen. There was an abundance of food available for players over the weekend. Pam Warner, Pat McGregor, Kay Anderson and her sister all helped with kitchen duties all weekend.
Saturday night dinner was a barbecue with lots of delicious salads and desserts, including Pam Warners "to die for" trifle.
The competition was won by David Williams, follow up John Doepel, third Maggie Cussell. Beverley Hoey received a wooden spoon for encouragement. This was her first tournament in croquet and she certainly played well.

A ONE BANANA MONKEY?
A new term, “one banana monkey”, emerged from a weekend of association croquet in York between four members of the National Team and a “York Team” of 4 West Australian players. No-one seems to know exactly what it means but, if you are so described, you can take it that you are not being paid a compliment.
Aside from the bonhomie, a great weekend of croquet was had on May 1 & 2. National players were Peter Lendrebe (NSW), Kevin Beard (Vic.), Martin Clarke (WA) and Ian Dumergue (WA). The “York Team” comprised Alan Sand and Ross Marshall (Como), Jeff Newcombe (Victoria Park) and Eric Ayling (York). Players were accommodated at the homes of Yorkies Bill Roy and Eric Ayling.
Predictably, the National Team players came out ahead but the “York Team” was far from disgraced, winning several of the games played over the weekend. Visiting players congratulated York on the quality of the courts and the hospitality.
Enquires regarding the derivation and usage of “one banana monkey” should be directed to Alan Sands of the Como Croquet Club.
