President Kay Anderson presenting Dorothy with Life Membership on 28th October 2024.
Dorothy Bull moved to York Western Australia in August 2003. With her husband, Denis, she went along to croquet one evening where they were met by Les Gibbney. Les advised them to go on Friday evenings when they played GC.
They went along on the next Friday, and were hooked, and joined the club early 2004.
Dorothy became Secretary of the club at the AGM in 2006. As there is a 3 consecutive year limit on holding the same office in the club, Dorothy was secretary for 9 ½ years over the next 16 years, and held the positions of president, secretary and treasurer during the times she was ineligible to be secretary. She was a committee member until 2023. Her loss of hearing now excludes her from being a committee member.
While on an interstate holiday in 2007, Dorothy discovered AC and started playing that sport as well as GC. Dorothy and Denis also introduced ricochet to York Croquet Club.
Dorothy became a certified GC coach and a certified GC Referee, and was State GC Referee Director for a number of years. Later, Dorothy became a Ricochet coach and referee, being only the second ricochet referee in Western Australia.
She was selected as a member of the GC State team in 2013, and played in the state team in 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. In 2017 Dorothy played in the Western Australian State GC Team when they won the Interstate Shield for the first time.
Dorothy also played in the state AC State Team in 2022.
Dorothy helped with the year 9 York High School children when they came along to croquet as part of their sports days. She holds the Working With Children Check Card.
Dorothy assisted with and, on many occasions, managed the York Croquet Challenge where non members were invited to compete for a perpetual trophy.
Dorothy was the tournament manager of many of the York Croquet Club tournaments.
In 2016, after winning multiple tournaments herself, Dorothy received the York Council Senior Sports Star of the year award.
When large tournaments were held at York, Dorothy and Denis hosted the Saturday evening BBQs at their home because it was not practical to have them at the club until the new clubhouse was built.
Dorothy attended many meetings between the president of the York Croquet Club and the President of the York Council in an effort to get council permission to replace the old club building. Dorothy was also involved in many fund raising efforts to pay for the new building.
When the new building was being built, Dorothy and Denis joined the other club members and community members who volunteered time to get the job done.
Dorothy feels very honoured in being only the 5th known person to have received Life Membership of the York Croquet club.
