Substitutes vs Complement:

In economics, one kind of good (or service) is said to be a substitute good for another kind so far as the two kinds of goods can be consumed or used in place of one another in at least some of their possible uses.[Wikipedia]

A complementary good or complement good in economics is a good which is consumed with another good; its cross elasticity of demand is negative. – It is two goods that are bought and used together.[Wikipedia]

In reality there can be things which are a mix. Like men and women. At an office they are more like substitutes, one can hire a man in place of a woman and vice versa. Home demands more of a complementary role, where mother and father are naturally two different roles. But as in our mind, the concept boundaries are somewhat diffused, we are generally unable to see whether the circumstances that led to a rule hold or not. So we start considering the situation-bounded rule as a norm. Thats why as gender equality is considered a norm in West, it has a negatively affected the family structure which has gone astray there. While in the East, role of men and women is considered complementary in a family, but this has a negative effect on women's identity and careers. Probably there is not a defined balance between the two and any choice has its pros and cons. One should analyze his choices case to case. Evaluate whether to be in substitute role or in a complementary role under given circumstances.
