Special education staff must strive to include students with disabilties in general education activities as much as possible. Remember, that students with disabilities are general education students first and foremost. Get to know the other teachers in your building/s even though their roles may be different from yours. Partner with them to the greatest extent possible.
A common pitfall for special education staff is to ask to be released from building meetings or building professional development activities because of the inability to see the relevance of the information. Please attend your building functions to the greatest extent possible to avoid isolation. We want you to be a part of your building and help build its culture.
Consider offering training in your building on ways to work effectively with students with disabilities. Some teachers may need information and training on specific disabilities such as autism or on strategies and interventions.
