Crash

There are several claims of bf109´s being shot down in this area on May 10th, 1940. unfortunately the archives are not conclusive and leave much for speculation. It is very probable that a plane did crash here but it will also be highly likely that the details of the plane and pilot will always remain a mistery.

The following descriptions are found:

May 10th.: Me Bf-109 shot down over BEIERLAND by D-21 nr 236 of 2e Lt Sitter after a dog-fight. Correct crash location not determined. In a river close to islands.

May 10th.: Me Bf-109D, 10th. Staffel of 10(N)/JG 2 shot down by Fokker G1 nr 311 of 1e Lt Sonderman South of ROTTERDAM, causing; “Fw Peter Keller am südlichen Stadtrand von Rotterdam notlanden musste. Er geriet in holländische Gefangenschaft, wurde den Engländern übergeben und nach Canada gebracht”.

May 10th. : Me Bf-109 shot down over the "HOEKSCHE WAARD" (Crashlocation not known;

supposted to have crashed in a river) by Fokker G1 328 of Sgt Soufree.

Possible Crew

Keller, P. Fw 10(Nacht)/JG-2 Bf 109D-1 (lost 5/10/40) Night Fighter Operational Clasp His 109 crashed in a river at Rotterdam Holland on 10 May, 1940, cause and pilot disposition unknown. (DeSwart) This may be one of the other Kellers on record.

Claim

Three Fokker T-V bombers are flying to WAALHAVEN airfield, protected by six D-XXI’s. At Waalhaven they are spotted by nine Me-109 aircraft en an entangled battle is developing. The 238 is being shot down. The 236 is shooting while diving at a landed Junkers Ju-52, hits a Me-109 that crashes near “Oud Beijerland” and returns intact to Schiphol.
