This may not seem obvious but using an HDMI connection
the sound stream is transmitted unaltered to the AV amp or TV. At that point your AV AMP or TV will decode the sound stream.
There are many sound applications for Windows.
If you try a DOLBY 5.1 test video or play any BluRay or DVD that has 5.1 sound
you should be able to hear 5.1 or 7.1 sound depending how the sound was encoded.
