Sometimes Windows Update gets stuck downloading updates.

With so many updates being deployed it is commonplace that some of them stall and need a bit of help to get going.
Windows Update can get stuck downloading updates. This also relates to
Windows 8.1

Windows 7 and
Windows Vista
Start off by checking your update Status. Press the windows key
on your keyboard and then click on settings
Select update and security
Check for updates. If your system is up to date all is well. If it is stuck at 45% or some other % this is how to fix it.
You need to run CMD prompt as Admin. Press Windows Key+X then select
CMD prompt as Admin
When in Command prompt
Stop the windows update service and bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
When services stopped open up this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
Return to "Command Prompt"
net start wuauserv
net start bits
When services are restarted you can check for updates and it should work
If you look at update history you will usually find evidence of any recent updates
