Following acceptance of the plan for the Redeployment of Swanbourne Hospital I was engaged to develop the Design Brief, Functional Schematic within the Development Budget set by the Service-infrastructure Plan, for each of the Psychogeriatric Extended Care Units (P.E.C.U.)
The PECUs were intended for high dependency dementia sufferers. Less dependent patients were accommodated in Staffed Cluster Houses. PECUs varied in the number of residents and facilities configuration (the former dimension reflecting each PECU's service populations and the latter their different physical contexts. Otherwise the functional content and design of the PECUs was the same. Each consisted of Residential facilities in suites of eight residents and Day Activity and Therapy Centre encompassing Social Activities Suite, Therapies Suite, Staff Offices and Amenities.
The design was informed by a definition and analysis of patients functional and behavioural characteristics. Residents had their own personalised room; two in every eight beds were provided in a two-bed room to accommodate couples.
