Welcome to the Mount Carmel Surgery Program! We look forward to working with you.
Attached is our Medical Student Handout which provides you with most of the information you will need while on rotation.
Auditioners should pay careful attention to the end of this notice
We have daily conference 7-8am. Typically you'll arrive around 5am, start seeing patients. Talk to the interns about which residents are seeing which patients . Your team can help (those of you who are brand new to surgery especially) figure out how to chart check and how to assess patients, etc. Then write notes (Med students- talk to the residents who are assigned that patient before you write the note) and that should be done before 6:45 so residents have a chance to read over your note and make corrections before conference. The note must be SIGNED in order for a resident to take it over and edit it.
The academic calendar link is in another section of wiki carmel, you can see the lecture for each day and prepare in advance. Wednesday is M&M or grand rounds depending on the day. You do not have to prepare for these.
Thursdays are "Chambers lecture" days which is a series of trauma and critical care lectures given by Dr. Chambers. The videos are in a different section of this site. You should watch the topic videos before the lecture as he will ask questions during the lecture itself. There will often be a paper quiz before his lectures to be completed, so notes should be done at 6:35 these days and everyone should show up to the lecture room no later than 6:50 to complete this quiz in advance. These quizzes are not graded, we go through them for learning purposes only.
4th year students on audition: you will need to do a 5-7 minute presentation on any topic of your choosing, please text the currently sitting academic chief to ask what date they would like you to present. Usually this is during your last week of rotation. you should be seeing 3-4 patients and writing notes on them by your final week.
