1797 George III Cartwheel penny, these two came from the same hole

The Cartwheel coin of 1797.
The coin was issued for several years with no change in date. A new design George III Copper penny was issued between 1806 and 1808 weighing 18.9g. Remarkable for its sheer size the Cartwheel 1d and 2d were struck to be worth their respective weight in copper. At the time an ounce of copper was worth a penny. One can easily imagine how the users of this coin would have been a little unflattering. Imagine trying to carry more than 4 or 5 of these coins! The penny weighs a full ounce (28.3g) and has a diameter of 36mm. The even bigger 2-penny version weighs 2 ounces (56.6g). Cartwheels were only issued during the reign George III 1760-1820.

The old abbreviation "d" for the penny comes from the denier, which in turn derives from the Roman denarius.
