CHRIST, THE WORD OF GOD

The Bible says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.." (John 1:1-5).

Who is this Word who was with God? What is the meaning of "the Word"? According to our human understanding, the word means the spoken or written language. The signature or thumb-impression of a person or his hand-writing identifies him. The voice coming from his mouth also identifies him. It is thus seen that the words of a person, written or oral, reveal his image. In other words, a person who expresses himself in a language has an image too. The image of that person has also his character. From his words, image and character, we can identify him. We can thus call the personality of a person as the word of that person. We cannot separate his word from his particular image and character. Similarly, we cannot separate his image and character from his word too.

Similarly, God has also His Word. We cannot separate His Word from Him. God reveals Himself through His Word. The Bible says clearly that the Word was with God and that the Word was God.

Let me quote a simple illustration in this regard. Sitting in India, I have seen President Barak Obama of USA in T.V and heard his speech in the same T.V. But I have not seen or met him in person. To me, he has been revealed through his image and speech. The particular image which I saw and the particular voice which I heard are of George Bush only. I cannot separate his image from his speech. He has been revealed to me in part. So, the word or personality of Bush has been revealed to me in part through his image and speech. If I know him intimately by conversing and becoming friendly with him, I will know his character also and will get a full revelation of him.

Likewise, we get a revelation of God through His Word. We know Him only through His Word in the same manner I know President Obama in part through his image and spoken words. The Bible says that God made all the things through the Word and that without Him (the Word), nothing was made that was made. The Word was in the beginning with God and all the things were created through this Word.

The Bible also says that in the Word was life, and that the life was the light of men. The life which you and I live is of this Word. The life of this Word is the light of men. This light shines in the darkness of this world caused by the sin and the darkness did not comprehend it. The darkness will never and cannot comprehend this light.

CHRIST JESUS is called 'The Word of God' in the Bible (Rev.19:13). Though Christ, the Word was manifested in flesh about 2000 years ago, the same Word was in the beginning with God and all things were made through Him. The Word was with God and the Word was God. Who is this Jesus? He is not only our Saviour who saves us from the sin but is also the very Creator of this universe.

( Job Anbalagan)
