Night at the Races, May 21, 2016 @ 6pm

The WHHSBPO will hold a Night at the Races fundraiser on Saturday, May 21, at 6 pm, North Versailles Public Library. All proceeds from the evening will go toward the purchase of a new band trailer.

We will need volunteers and attendees -- invite friends and family for a fun evening! All attendees must be 21 or older since alcohol is served at this event. Read on to learn how the evening and events will work.

Before the event:

One hundred racehorses will be for sale for $10 each before the event. We need to sell all of these horses for the event to be successful! The buyer gets to name the racehorse. If your racehorse wins its race (see below), you win $20. Ellen Kiley (412-445-6727 | greenlioness7@gmail.com) will coordinate the selling of racehorses; please contact her to purchase a horse, or a block of horses to sell to friends and family.

Tickets for the event will also be for sale for $15. This includes dinner, snacks, soda, and beer. You are encouraged to bring your own bottle if there’s something else you’d prefer to drink. Special snacks to share with your table are also a good way to make friends.

You do not need to buy a racehorse to attend the event! You also do not need to attend to buy a racehorse (but you will have more fun if you do). If you do not plan to attend, make arrangements in advance to designate someone to receive your potential winnings.

Night of the event:

When you arrive at the event, you will receive a slate of the night’s races. Ten horses each run in 10 races. These are video recordings of races from around the country; a professional race caller announces the races (with your horse names) and ensures that the results of the races and the betting are fair. In addition to the stakes for the horse owners, there is betting before each race in $2 increments. If you pick the winner, you win cash depending on that horse’s odds.

At the end of the evening, there is an 11th race, where horses 1 through 10 are auctioned off live. Attendees often pool their money to buy a racehorse at this auction. The owner (or owners) of the winning horse for the 11th race win half of the race pot (the auction value of all 10 horses).

Other small games of chance will be ongoing through the evening: a 50/50, paint stick drawings (a short-term, 20-person 50/50), and others. There will also be a lottery tree and gift baskets raffled off at the event.

What should you do now?

• • Get the word out to family, friends, and neighbors about attending the WHHSBPO Night at the Races on May 21.

  • Put the date (May 21, 6 pm) on your calendar. We'll need many volunteers to make the evening a success, and you can also participate in any or all of the activities.
