Welcome to Mrs. Wira's homepage for AP Latin! This year we will be tackling the rigorous AP syllabus of reading a great amount of Julius Caesar's Gallic War and Vergil's Aeneid.
For the Gallic War, we will be examining how Julius Caesar used these dispatches from Gaul to the Roman people to curry and maintain favor in Rome, despite his lengthy absence from the city itself.
The Aeneid is a masterpiece by both classical and modern standards. Vergil's epic story and poetic techniques inspired and influenced countless artists and authors after him. I hope to convey my enthusiasm and appreciation for this complex text and its political and cultural nuances to my students in a way that inspires them to enjoy taking this course as much as I enjoy teaching it.
By the time of the AP exam in May, students will be well-prepared to tackle the various sections of the exam: multiple-choice, translation, free-response essay, and short answer. The schedule includes daily translation and many days of practicing translation and comprehension of the prescribed lines as well as the "unseen" portions of the AP exam.
For more information on the format of the AP exam, please see the link to the official AP Latin website at the College Board.
I am excited to be teaching AP Latin and look forward to a great year!
