The difference between Applied and Academic/University and College Courses
Grade 12 students are given a copy of their credit counselling summary at least three times during their final year of high school. They are given instruction on how to read their credit counselling summary so they can ensure they meet all graduation requirements:
- 30 credits (18 comp. / 12 electives)
- 40 hours of community service
- Literacy Test (Gr. 10 OSSLT)
Student are responsible for all aspects of their education and this includes their credit counselling summary. If applicable, students should ensure private school forwards a final transcript to Westmount upon completion of the course. Westmount will then record this course and mark on the credit counselling summary. Students should also be aware that private school courses sometime have the same course code as day school courses. For, example Torah for Teens may offer a philosophy HZT. This means you cannot take HZT4U at Westmount since the codes are the same. You will get credit for only one course. This is the same for IDC codes at Westmount. Students can only take one IDC course per year during day school at Westmount.
Full Disclosure
Withdrawals and failures from Grade 9 and 10 courses are not recorded on the Ontario Student Transcript. If a student withdraws from a Grade 11 or 12 course within five (5) instructional days after the issuance of the first Provincial report card then the course will not be recorded on the transcript. If a student withdraws from a course more than five (5) days after the reporting period, a withdrawal (W) is entered in the credit column and the student’s mark at the time of withdrawal is recorded as a percentage in the achievement column of the transcript. In addition, if a student repeats a course, each attempt and the mark will be recorded in the transcript with only one credit granted. The course with the lower mark will have an “R” entered in the credit column. Any questions concerning this regulation should be directed to a guidance counsellor.
